The Stables

Description

Lower Collaton is an old traditional farmhouse dating back to the Domesday Book and before. We have retired from serious farming, but in the fields in the quiet south facing valley are our small flock of Shetland, Jacob and Zwartble sheep. Chicken, and ducks can be found in the yard. The Stables is a detached, charming and comfortable converted stable and hayloft which has retained all its character and its ancient exposed beams in all the rooms. It has been inspected and graded 4* by the A.A. Polished wood and slate floors, oak staircase, and south facing views from the upstairs living area. The entrance hall with slate floor leads into a spacious double bedroom with king size bed, large walnut wardrobe and dressing table. A smaller twin bedded room is on the left, and bathroom with W.C., basin, shower in the bath, and combination washing machine/tumble drier. The rooms have their original gnarled old beams, pine floors and natural wood finishes. Up the oak stairs the remainder of the Stables is open plan. The living area faces south with views of the fields and valley, and has a wood burning stove, sofa and easy chairs. The kitchen is fully equipped, with pine table and dresser, and has hand painted tiles above the worktop. Between the kitchen and living area is an informal eating area, with pine dining table and chairs. Oil fired central heating (free of charge), wood burning stove, T.V., D.V.D., microwave, fridge/freezer, washing machine / tumble drier, dishwasher, carry cot, high chair and various other little gadgets. Bed linen and towels are included in the price. Outside there is a parking area and a paved patio with seating. Barbeque is available for our guests. One well behaved dog is very welcome, and would enjoy the lovely walks nearby. The Stables are available from Easter through to late September. Lettings are from Friday to Friday. Visit our website www.lower-collaton-farm.co.uk which has loads of information, plus online availability and booking!

(N.B. Depending on the details provided by the manager/owner of this property the map may either show the exact location of the property, or simply the location of the village or town in which it is situated.)

Historically a major naval port, particularly in Tudor times, the town of Dartmouth sits on the east side of the Dart estuary, opposite Kingswear, in the South Hams district of Devon. With a backdrop of rolling hills and beautiful view of the river upstream Dartmouth is set within a landscape which has justly been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The town itself is full of interest with narrow lanes and many historic listed buildings and shops of Elizabethan and medieval character. The famous Butterwalk, which is now the location for Dartmouth Museum, has a line of granite columns supporting the carved wooden fascias of the buildings above. Sadly, the town was struck by a fire in 2010 which damaged a number of listed buildings in Fairfax Place and Higher Street.

Dartmouth’s naval origins are evident to this day in the college which sits above the outskirts of the town at which all of the Royal Navy’s officers are trained. The town has proved popular with some famous residents over the years including Agatha Christie who had a house along the river bank (which any good river cruise will surely point out!) and Flora Thompson, the author of Lark Rise to Candleford.

Transport is well catered for, with bus and road access, as well as a heritage steam railway which brings in many vistors from Paington to the estuary station across the river at Kingswear. Several regular ferrys operate across the river to transport visitors to and from Dartmouth itself. With a good range of restaurants and holiday accommodation, including many cottages searchable on Go2, Dartmouth has a lot to offer and is an essential visit on any south Devon holiday.
